Little Hearts For His Glory, Unit 6

This year, we are using Heart of Dakota’s Little Hearts For His Glory curriculum.
It is adaptable for children ages 5 – 7.  To read more about our choice,

Alex is 5 years, 8 months.
He will turn 6 in December 2013.

Alex is learning right now that history is HIS story – the story of God’s world!

Alex impressed me by READING this map (in the Family Time Bible) independently and using it to trace the Israelite’s journey from Egypt to the Red Sea to Mt. Sinai to the wilderness to Canaan!

acting out the story of Balaam and the donkey…
I sent him to his room to get a foam sword, and he came back with a light saber.
So angels now use light sabers… Winking smile

We are finishing All About Reading Level 1 – and moving on to level 2 – this year.

introducing compound words

Oh, my goodness!  He did SO well on the fluency pages for these long compound words!
I was so very impressed with how well he can read large words!

(Please keep in mind that I have the older version of LHFHG, and if you purchase a new guide, your math will follow a different sequence than what we are doing.  I created my own spreadsheet to match the math activities in the older version of LHFHG to the lessons in Singapore Essentials.  It’s not perfect, but it will work for us!) Practicing shapes – Alex worked on sides & corners, while the littler ones just enjoyed the shapes.  (Max picked up a bit about sides and corners.)

We read about how the sun and moon stood still while the Israelites fought against the Gibeonites.  Then I was the “sun” holding a flashlight while Alex rotated in a circle to show how, when it was day he faced the sun, and when it was night he was facing away from the sun.  (Whoa, that was a rotten sentence, lol!)

I accidentally posted these pictures last week, when they were really from the beginning of unit 6…so I’ll repost in order to have it in the correct place should I ever refer to this when doing LHFHG with another child in a few years

We also talked about how clouds are made of water droplets,
and the water begins to drip down when the cloud becomes heavy with water.
Alex found this fascinating!

We are using Happy Handwriting and Rod & Staff ABC series.

Alex LOVES the Do It Carefully book!  He gets so excited about doing these pages, even though they are just simple workbook pages.

One day, his Do It Carefully book asked him to practice writing his name.  I used this as a good opportunity to teach him to write his name with an uppercase A and lowercase for the rest of the letters.  This is the first time he’s written his name “correctly”.

I feel like handwriting is hit or miss with him.  Some days he does well (like this D page), but other days I wonder if he’s ever going to learn to make his letters correctly (like the P page we did later in the unit that was so awful that I don’t even have a picture)!

We’ve finished Reddy Fox and moved on to the next story – The Adventures of Peter Cottontail.  We are REALLY trying to stick to the schedule and accomplish all the narration and brief activities that accompany each chapter.

Painting the ‘mortar’ in the walls of Jericho.  When it’s dry, you’re supposed to hang a red ribbon from it as a reminder of Rahab’s red rope.  Unfortunately, Alex’s paper was so WET that it curled up as it dried.  We had to give up.  That’s what I get for trying to create my own mortar rather than following the instructions in the manual!  Note to self for next time: just buy the shaving cream!  It’s not that expensive, and you can always use the extra for tactile handwriting practice!
